Applications of the Mathematica technical computing system in mathematics and computer science, physical and biological sciences, and the disciplines of economics, education, and engineering

IMS ’97 follows the successful symposium in July 1995 in Southampton, England, where more than 60 papers were reviewed and over 100 delegates from 17 countries attended.

Objectives
The International Mathematica Symposium (IMS) was conceived to hold a series of conferences devoted to applications of the Mathematica computer algebra system in different fields of science. IMS ’97 intends to keep pace with Mathematica as its influence extends in every field of computing in research, education, industry, and business.

The conference will provide a forum for users from diverse fields to present original papers covering their Mathematica-based research and to learn about current developments and uses of advanced scientific computing.

Besides paper presentations and a variety of keynote lectures, the symposium will include several tutorials in different fields, discussion forums, poster presentations, and software demonstrations.

Call for Submissions
Delegates of IMS ’97 are invited to submit one or more of the following:

  • an abstract for a paper
  • a proposal for a discussion panel
  • a poster presentation
  • a software demonstration

Abstract
If you submit an abstract, it should be 2-4 pages in length. The deadline for submission is December 13, 1996.

In the abstract, the use and role of Mathematica should be clearly stated. Authors should explain how deeply the work depends on the use of Mathematica, which features of it were vital, and possibly, which problems were encountered. Acceptance of papers will be based on the subject matter of the paper and on the significance of the contribution in the appropriate field. If accepted by the program committee, the author(s) will be invited to submit an 8-page paper which will then be considered by the program committee for inclusion in the proceedings.

Discussion Panel
Delegates wishing to join or propose a discussion panel for a forum on a topic of their choice should indicate the scope of the intended forum. Discussion forums will normally last for an hour.

Poster Presentation
Proposals should cover an area of not more that 2 square meters, and authors will be allocated a 2-hour time slot in which they should be available for consultation.

Software Demonstration
A laboratory and many separate computers will be available for demonstration of Mathematica packages and notebooks. Authors will be allocated a 2-hour time slot in which they can give demonstrations and make laboratory presentations.

Submission and Registration Deadlines
Abstracts of 2-4 pages are to be submitted by December 13, 1996. Please send abstracts to Veikko Keränen in Rovaniemi, Finland. It is preferable to send them by ordinary mail, and four hard copies of each abstract are requested. Electronic submissions to veikko.keranen@ramk.fi or keranen@algebra.rotol.ramk.fi are also permitted.
Notification of acceptance to authors will be made by January 31, 1997.
Final copies of accepted papers are due by April 11, 1997.
Registration is also due by April 11, 1997.
